Determination, discipline, and dedication are the three keys to Doctor Sampson (Sam) Davis’ success. Growing up in the streets of Newark was not easy for any child, pre-teen, teen, and adult, especially for Davis but with the three D’s to success he speaks of in The Pact: Three Young Men Make a Promise and Fulfill a Dream, shows that anyone can succeed when you have friends to help you through it all. Even though Davis did not have a perfect childhood, determination, dedication and discipline would help push him. Davis, as a child, has seen what describes a dysfunctional family and has witnessed many traits of physical, mental, and verbal abuse between his mother and father; â€Å"Your daddy ain’t shit,† and, â€Å"Your mama ain’t shit† (Davis 19). In some instances, the violence was so severe that the use of a firearm or the destruction of property occurred. Davis’ father would divorce from his mother but, attempt to be there for his children, yet the divorce still took an emotional toll on the kids. As for Davis, he would bury his feelings, to get over the divorce. Davis acknowledged his mother lacked an adequate education, thus, this motivated him to become well educated. However, acquiring adult responsibilities, such as writing and making bank deposits and reading important documents to his illiterate was a grand task for a young child. In the Allegory, the prisoner arises to the upper world and discovers there is a greater truth. When the prisoner goes towards the light, â€Å"he will suffer sharp pain†¦ but that now, when he is approaching nearer to being and his eye is turned towards more real existence, he has a clearer vision. † (Plato 2) Now the prisoner is a real â€Å"being† and understands his real existence in the world which he did not have before. In the Matrix, very similar scenario is presented when Morpheus enables Neo to open his eyes for the first time. Neo recloses his eyes when he questions, â€Å"Why does my eyes hurt? † (The Matrix) and Morpheus tells him the reason that because he is using them for the first time. Only now is he able to tell his true existence of being alive, that all his life he was living in a virtual world and now that he is free in the sense that he is â€Å"a being† now. I would feel likewise if I had to discover that currently I am in a projected world and not experiencing reality. Theoretically, if I was to discover my real existence, it would scar my life in knowing that all I have lived so far was unreal and I have no actual family however I would begin appreciating the wonderful truth. The prisoner is, â€Å"happy in his condition and state of being, and he will pity the others. †(Plato 4) After acquiring the knowledge of the truth of existence, the prisoner is content with his situation and appreciates his life because now he has a purpose to live. In my opinion this is true simply because when I know the truth I tend to feel more secure and almost superior to know that I am part of a greater good and pity the people who don’t have that opportunity. In a similar manner, Neo begins to appreciate the world when he knows his true potential after the Oracle tells him that he is â€Å"the One† to fix the program. (The Matrix) I believe that as humans we are hard-wired to discover our true purpose and existence which ultimately enables us to appreciate our lives much more. Lastly, I would choose the red pill in the search for god or a super being to know the full potential of how much command I have over my own life. Descartes believes that it is not, â€Å"Deity, who is sovereignly good and the fountain of truth, but that some malignant demon, who is at once exceedingly potent and deceitful. † (Descartes 4) The system in the matrix is operated similar means, where the reality is people like Morpheus, Trinity, and Neo who are basically gods because they have control of their life and the demons in the Matrix who ultimately deceive them. (The Matrix) Descartes supports that a demon is the one who deceive people however he understand that it is himself that has authority over his life, similar to the understanding Morpheus and Neo have. I believe it would be a great feeling to recognize that we are in control of our lives and it is not god who decides our destiny. Furthermore, it kills me know that I god has created everything perfect and my fate is predetermined regardless my decision making. Descartes feels similar as he believes, â€Å"that there is a God who is all powerful, and who created me, such as I am, has, for a long time, obtained steady possession of my mind. † (Descartes 3) Descartes constantly thinks about the prospect of god and his creations to determine when god created him, is he under his control or of his own. Alike in The matrix, Morpheus asks Neo if he believes in fate, Neo neglects that belief, â€Å"because [he] doesn’t like the idea that [he is] not in control of [his] life. † (The Matrix) Like me, Neo wants to know whether it is god that decides one’s fate or they command their own lives, but he believes there is no god. Central Station essays My first impression of the movie Central Station was, Oh no, some foreign subtitled film that wont make any sense. Boy was I wrong on that account. I thoroughly enjoyed the movie and found a lot of symbolism and comedy in it. The first scene of the movie was a shocker to me. I never thought that Rio was like that, especially at a train station. The sheer volume of people would be so overwhelming to me if I were there. What also surprised me was the fact that everyone seemed to be so overwhelmed with the hardships of life that they could still find a single blossom of hope in a retired teacher, Dora, the scrivener. In a place full of hatred and despair, Dora could bring hope and life. She is like a desert rose in the way that she lives in a harsh environment but can still grow to bring the landscape some sense of beauty and life. However, like every rose she had her thorns. This becomes apparent when she writes a letter for a lady and her son, Josue. The letter she was supposed to send to Josues father she kept for reasons that I never really understood, maybe she didnt feel Josues father, Jesus, deserved to know about his son because he was as Dora would call him a drunkard, or maybe she was just protecting Josue because their fathers had a lot in common. Throughout the movie this becomes more evident and starts to take on a very subtle, but powerful outlook on religion in my viewpoint. This outlook, while being some what hidden underneath layers of Josues stubborn belief in his father, rings through the enter movie and raises the question, Can one survive in a harsh world on hope? According to this movie the answer would be yes. Also the parallels to Christianity are well laid out that it is almost missed due to the content of the movie. One by one, countries were pulled in due to the alliance system. There were also many reasons that led to the beginning of WWII. A few of these reasons were the Great Depression, the rise of nationalism, and the emergence of leaders such as Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini. The main reason war broke out in Europe was that on September 1, 1939 Germany invaded Poland. The war for the United States didnt begin until Japan bombed Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.
